World Cultures & Travel: The Human Face of Islam

  • Lebanon Public Library 55 Academy Street Lebanon, OR, 97355 United States (map)

The Human Face of Islam: Islam is the fastest growing major religion in the world today, claiming over 1.6 billion adherents or 23% of the world's population.  Islam's origins are deeply rooted in Judeo-Christian traditions.  This digital slide program attempts to use contemporary images to illustrate events that happened hundreds, even thousands, of years ago.  Biblical stories are retold to set the stage for the development of Islam and then show the historical and geographical context of that development.  The images have been collected over a twenty year period and are from a dozen countries that are Islamic or have been influenced by Islam.

About the Presenter:  Donald Lyon is recently retired from operating photographic tours around the world.  Lyon has a Master's degree in International Relations and has traveled in over 100 countries.  An Associate of the Photographic Society of America, Don was presented with the International Understanding through Photography Award by PSA in 2008.  He lives in Brownsville, Oregon and maintains an interest in world affairs.
